Every remodeling project presents its own unique challenges. For this client, the original vision at Carrita Seaview was to replace an outdated kitchen, optimize ocean views with new decking and windows, update the mother-in-law’s suite, and add a new loft. However, everything changed on one historic day when the Woolsey Fire swept through Malibu in November 2018, leveling this neighborhood and the remodel that was underway.
Shifting to a ground-up design-build project, the JRP team collaborated closely with the homeowners through every step of designing, permitting, and building their new home at Carrita Seaview. As avid horse owners, their redesign inspiration began with rustic farmhouse elements and evolved into a refined modern farmhouse, reflected in clean lines of white batten siding and dark bronze metal roofing.
Starting fresh, the interior spaces were repositioned to maximize the breathtaking ocean views from all bedrooms, the kitchen, and open living areas. The kitchen showcases a stacked chiseled-edge granite island paired with cement pendant fixtures and rugged concrete-look perimeter countertops. The tongue-and-groove ceiling detail is echoed on the stove hood, creating a perfectly coordinated style. A herringbone tile pattern adds visual contrast around the cooking area, while the generous double-section kitchen sink includes side-by-side faucets for added functionality.
Bi-fold doors and windows provide unobstructed, sweeping views of the natural mountainside and Pacific Ocean. Opening these windows creates a seamless pass-through from the kitchen to the outdoor entertaining area. The expansive wrap-around decking offers an ideal space for gathering, dining, or soaking up the California sunshine while enjoying the remarkable views of Carrita Seaview and beyond.
