Planning Your Outdoor Kitchen Or Built-In Barbecue

The idea of an expansive outdoor kitchen is appealing to grill masters and aspiring chefs as well as to those who are passionate about luxury outdoor living. Cooking in the open air is a very different experience than cooking inside. As appealing as the idea of having an outdoor kitchen is, making that idea a reality requires planning. If you are considering adding an outdoor kitchen or built-in barbeque to your home, contact us at JRP Design & Remodel to discover all your options.

Ask the Hard Questions First

  • How do you intend to use your outdoor kitchen? Will it be for food prep as well as cooking? Will one chef use it at a time or will you be cooking in tandem with someone else?
  • How will the food be served? Will it be taken back inside to the dining room or served at an outdoor living area?
  • What kind of budget do you have for the outdoor kitchen’s construction? What elements are non-negotiable and which are you more flexible on?

Below, we discuss the steps that are taken whenever we build an outdoor kitchen or barbecue area.

Step 1: Talk to JRP Design & Remodel about Design

Set up a free in-home consultation where we can sketch a quick diagram of your ideal kitchen’s layout. Measure your available space and then arrange your desired elements inside it. We will make sure to accommodate the space clearance for safe appliance use. As a general guideline, we allow 30 – 36 inches of space on either side of your grill or stove for adequate space to work.

Kitchens need more than a cooking surface or grill. Outdoor living spaces at a minimum must have steel or aluminum storage shelves or cabinets; larger outdoor kitchens may have refrigerators, wine coolers, and ice makers installed, too. Select the items that will best accommodate your plans for the kitchen.

Then your JRP Design & Remodel professional will turn your ideas into a full design.

Step 2: Break Ground

The preparation required for building will vary depending on the nature of your existing space. If you have a large patio or deck then there’s no need for us to excavate additional ground unless you want an expansive cooking area. Existing patios and decks can be used as kitchen areas and, provided that the surface can accommodate the weight load, our construction efforts can begin immediately.

If the ground needs to be broken for construction, we will take care of all the necessary precautions. For example, we will identify buried power and gas lines. Some lines are submerged only a few feet and can pose serious danger if struck or broken.

Step 3: Final Installation

After we set up a foundation for your outdoor kitchen, we’ll install all the appliances and cabinetry along with stonework and artisanal touches. We can get as ambitious as you want, including setting up TVs and sound systems in your outdoor living space or creating water features as a part of the design.

JRP Design & Remodel will also ensure that all power and water sources are hooked up and that waste is removed in a timely fashion so you can get to enjoying your outdoor kitchen as soon as possible. You’ll love inviting all your friends and family to a barbecue with your new outdoor space, which will also raise the value of your home should you ever decide to sell.
