Modern Zen
Oak Park
What began as a dated and disconnected childhood home in Oak Park became a calm and deeply personal retreat designed around creativity, ritual, and intentional living.
The homeowners partnered with us to transform the home into a space that reflected their lifestyle and artistic vision. The homeowner, a renowned Los Angeles tattoo artist whose work is inspired by traditional Chinese brush painting, brought a deep appreciation for simplicity, balance, and natural expression to the design process.
Guided by the principles of Wabi Sabi, the renovation included a full reconfiguration of the primary living spaces, remodeled kitchen and bathrooms, a dedicated art studio, a transformed loft bedroom and study, custom plaster work, bespoke millwork, and refreshed outdoor living areas.
At the heart of the home is a sushi bar inspired kitchen anchored by a monolithic waterfall island that extends into an integrated dining table. A hand sculpted Tuscany Cement Limestone fireplace by Sasha Seyb Studio serves as the living room focal point, while custom woodwork, river rock flooring, and a recycled live edge eucalyptus vanity by Coyne Design reinforce the home’s connection to nature.
Large bifold doors and a new sun tunnel bring natural light deep into the home, strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Defined by simplicity and restraint, Modern Zen is a home shaped by artistry, craftsmanship, and intention. The result is a warm and highly personal environment designed for gathering, creativity, and everyday moments of calm.
