Seating Strategies for Everyday Living and Entertaining
How To Plan Your
Kitchen Seating
The kitchen is no longer just a place to cook. It has become the center of how we gather, entertain, work, and move through daily life. But creating the right seating layout is about far more than simply adding stools to an island or placing a dining table nearby.
Every home, lifestyle, and floor plan calls for a different approach to flow and functionality. From oversized island bar seating and integrated dining tables to breakfast banquettes, secondary bar areas, and layered seating zones throughout an open concept space, the way seating is arranged has a major impact on how a kitchen feels and functions.
In this guide, we’re sharing a range of kitchen projects that explore different seating configurations and the design considerations behind each one.
Creating Connection
in Large Open Spaces
In our Modern Farmhouse Project, the open concept layout was designed to create connection without sacrificing warmth. Large open spaces can often feel difficult to fill or disconnected in function, so the design focused on creating natural flow between each gathering area.
A Kitchen Designed for
Morning to Night Living
In our Mediterranean Marvel project, the kitchen was designed around multiple dining and gathering experiences throughout the day. Rather than relying on a single dining area, the space layers together several seating moments that support both everyday routines and entertaining.
Designing Seating
Around A View
In our Malibu Carrita Seaview project, the ocean view became the driving force behind every seating decision and spatial layout throughout the home. Rather than following a more traditional arrangement with the island facing the living room, the kitchen was intentionally oriented toward the expansive coastal views to maximize connection to the outdoors from every angle.
- Main kitchen sink is positioned directly toward the expansive view and the outdoor bar top seating encourages conversation between indoor and outdoor spaces
- Kitchen island seating faces the view, prioritizing the coastal setting as the focal point of daily living
- Large dining table placement naturally guides sightlines toward the ocean and patio dining table while remaining connected to the living space
- Living room seating and fireplace were arranged to continue reinforcing the view as the center of the home
- Multiple seating zones create options for entertaining, relaxing, dining, and gathering throughout the space
Mixing Casual Dining
With Entertaining Spaces
In homes like our Worldly Heritage project, layering together multiple seating experiences, blends functional everyday living with a more eclectic entertaining atmosphere. Rather than relying on one central gathering space, each seating zone was designed with a distinct purpose and personality.
Kitchen island features an integrated butcher block extension, creating a natural spot for casual seating, serving, and charcuterie style entertaining
Built in dining bench maximizes seating while working seamlessly around the home’s unique window structure
Combination of bench seating and woven dining chairs creates a more collected, layered feel
Dedicated bar area positioned directly behind the seating zone reinforces an eclectic hosting atmosphere
Multiple seating moments support everything from casual mornings and family dinners to larger social gatherings and entertaining
Built In Seating for Better
Flow and Function
This Westlake Trails project features a long, elongated kitchen layout where preserving clear circulation and openness became a major design priority. Rather than placing a dining table in the center of the space and interrupting the natural path of travel, seating was thoughtfully integrated into surrounding architectural moments.
- Built in bench seating transforms the wall nook into a cozy breakfast and formal dining space without disrupting flow
- Kitchen island barstools create a casual spot for morning coffee, conversation, and everyday gathering
- Elongated layout maintains open circulation throughout the kitchen and surrounding spaces
- Outdoor patio lounge extends the kitchen experience beyond the interior for entertaining and long summer evenings
- Multiple seating zones support both intimate daily routines and larger indoor outdoor gatherings
